Hard Work Won’t Make You Successful — But Doing This Will

0
working hard

There’s an important difference between working hard and working smart. In the first case, it’s possible to extend huge amounts of effort that, in the end, net you absolutely nothing. In the second case, your odds of being rewarded for your efforts are vastly improved. Working hard does not always pay off; the following four examples will are proof positive of that fact.

1. You Don’t Like Your Work

Walking into work every day with enthusiasm for what you do makes all of your efforts well worth it. On the other hand, dreading what you do or having no real stake in it renders it pointless. At the end of the day, you should feel fulfilled and optimistic about the work that you have completed. That feeling, in and of itself, is highly beneficial. Most of the time, it pays off in spades in the form of promotions, advancements and increased income.

2. You Don’t Believe in What You Do

Do you ever find yourself belittling the work that you do? If so, you probably don’t believe in it very much. If you’re of the mentality that it’s just a way to bring home a paycheck, you’re doing things the wrong way. You should believe in the mission that’s behind the work that you do. That way, you’ll work harder to achieve it and will be proud of what you accomplish. All of the hard work in the world can’t make up for being unenthusiastic about your job.

3. You’re Stuck in a Go-Nowhere Job

If your job is nothing more than an endless, repetitive loop with no end – or promotions – in sight, why put forth extra effort on it? Working harder won’t free you from such an interminable situation. If you’re not careful, you could end up being one of those people who’s dedicated the best years of their life to a job that, in the end, has produced no real value. Be mindful of how much effort you extend; pay attention to whether or not it’s actually getting you anywhere. If it’s not, you might want to jump ship sooner rather than later and start a new job soon.

4. You’re Working on the Wrong Things

When you work on innovations and improvements, it’s easy to put forth a ton of extra effort. After all, you’ll get to see your ideas come to fruition. Working on mindless tasks that don’t produce any added value, though, can drain the life out of you. Furthermore, extending extra effort on idle tasks won’t get you any positive benefits in the long run. Look for work that inspires you and that allows you to be innovative and proactive – your hard work will pay off enormously in such cases.

5. You Aren’t Networking

If you are on the job search then you must know the importance of constant and deliberate networking. On paper, you may have everything that your ideal employer wants. If you don’t know the right people, though, even the most well-polished resume and spot-on experience in the world isn’t going to help. The importance of networking simply can’t be overemphasized. Or you can simply be networking to develop professional or social contacts, but that comes with it.

Even after you’ve landed your dream job, it’s still crucial to maintain good networking habits. By doing so, you’ll be able to advance your career in a more efficient and effective way. Look to use successful networking tips that could make all the difference.

6. You Aren’t Prepared for Interviews

When you are a recent graduate and do not have any experience with a job interview, it can be a challenge to ace your first job interview. As you will be applying for entry-level jobs, there might be a number of candidates with the same qualifications interviewing for the same position. In order to stand out from the crowd, it is essential that you make the best impression in the interview. Follow these job interview tips to confidently prepare and excel in your first job interview after graduation or at any time in your career.

The Bottom Line

So, where does hard work fit being successful? And what does it mean for you?

Oxford defines hard work as, “a great deal of effort or endurance.”

Merriam-Webster defines hardworking as, “industrious, diligent.”

No one gets to define hard work for you. Just like success, you define hard work for yourself and nobody else.

Your definition of hard work should support your definition of success!

The Best Tips for Writing a Great Resume

Here are some tips for writing a great resume that you should incorporate so that you can boost your career.

tips for writing a resume

Resume Tip 1: Use Great Formatting

The initial look at your resume will last less than thirty seconds, no matter how tight the copy. If it is difficult to scan due to excessive length or poor organization, it might get tossed in the reject pile.

Make sure that you use a readable font, definitive headings, and wide margins. Utilize bold and italics to help make scanning easier. Bullet lists are a great way to highlight important points.

Resume Tip 2: Focus on Accomplishments Rather than Plain Descriptions

Hiring managers need to know what potential employees can bring to the table that will help build their company and solve existing problems. You need your resume to show them how you have been able to use your skills in the past to troubleshoot similar issues with success and to the satisfaction of your former employers.

Tell them what you did, not what the job description requires. Start with one to two lines about the job description, then follow up with your actual accomplishments. Show off what benefits you brought to the company. These should showcase your skill set, not a generic idea of what the role you were supposed to play in the company.

Resume Tip 3: Quantify Your Accomplishments

One of the most common resume mistakes is to focus on jargon rather than accomplishments. Remember that the point of your resume is to market yourself, selling your skills and strengths rather than a general bio.

Show off specific things that you have done that show why you are the perfect candidate for the position. Gain their interest by using specific wording for your achievements and using hard facts and figures to back your claims. If you aren’t sure, consider what would have occurred had you not performed your role well.

Resume Tip 4: Consider the Industry

Mechanic engineering resumes should not use a lot of creative designs like those in advertising and other artistic fields. Too much distinction in your presentation can be a sure way to get your resume skipped over.

Remain conservative and make sure that you have tight, error-free copy on attractive paper.

Resume Tip 5: Use a Career Summary Rather than an Objective

Objectives are often generic because everyone is seeking essentially the same thing: a fulfilling job that uses their skill set. On the other hand, a career summary shows them who you are and your capabilities.

You need to hook them from the start because you only have one chance to make a first impression. Your summary should grab their eye and show them how you can become an invaluable member of the team who is capable of bringing your A-game to the table and provide viable solutions.

Resume Tip 6: It’s All About Networking

If you are currently unemployed, then you should make a full-time job out of searching for a job. Networking is an essential aspect of getting your name and reputation out there. Senior and mid-level positions are often filled via networking opportunities, and you need to make sure that your name is on the lips of the right folks. Not only should you work with recruiters, let others in your industry know your needs. They can provide great insights and recommendations.

Networking includes previous business contacts, including former employers and subordinates. Additionally, sales reps and vendors who you have had positive relations within recent years. Also, check the alumni directory of your alma mater for other potential connections.

What Makes An Amazing Resume?

Okay, so what makes an amazing resume? How can you stand out to employers? Remember, it’s a great idea to find out if your employer uses an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). This is a type of software that scans your resume for keywords before passing it onto an actual human being. If you need an ATS resume, you’ll need to change up the format. Luckily, if you don’t want to do all the work yourself you can use a template for does all the work for you. You can see here for more information.

If you use these tips for creating your resume, you will be much closer to securing an interview. Remember, a resume is to market yourself, selling your skills and strengths to secure your dream job and advance in your career.

Feeling Financially Overwhelmed? You’re Not Alone

0
financially overwhelmed

Feeling financially overwhelmed? You’re not alone. Financial stress may be unavoidable, but there are steps that you can take to help you prosper financially.

Do I have to mention that 50% of American households cannot afford an unexpected bill of $500 or more, or only 35% of credit card holders pay off their balance each month?

Or do I need to let you know that by missing a credit card payment, or maxing out your card, can lead to a reduction in your credit score, which means a more expensive lease agreement or personal loan agreement when going to borrow money?

millennials are screwed

Or do I mention that when most people earn more money, they simply upgrade what they have or attain another bill through another subscription etc., meaning that the extra money that they have earned is negated?

So, regardless of earnings, the same result will always occur at the end of the month.

So given all these statistics how can millennials fair in a looming prospect of being financially successful?

Save First, and Then Spend

If you are feeling financially screwed you need to focus on money saving ideas.

Pay yourself first. When I first heard this phrase, I actually thought, how do I pay myself? What with?

Then I realized that it does not really mean pay yourself first, but save first and then spend.

At some point in time in our lives, odds are is that we have been short of money. Whether it be at the grocery store, traveling, or being on vacation.

In that case, what did we do? We simply made smarter choices. You made do with some things and not others. Think about how your decisions changed when you were short of money.

When you know you have less money to spend, you make smarter choices, because you have to think about the best way to spend that money.

Each dollar has a value and you can only spend it once. I would recommend using that same mentality even when you aren’t short on cash.

Savings is Key

When you get paid, I suggest putting 10% away immediately. You will soon get used to having less disposable income each month, but guess what, you will be making smarter decisions, which is a win-win.

(If for example you get paid $1000 per month)

Month Month Amount Cumulative
1 100 100
2 100 200
3 100 300
4 100 400
5 100 500
6 100 600
7 100 700
8 100 800
9 100 900
10 100 1000
11 100 1100
12 100 1200

By the end of the year, you have a month’s salary in the bank, you no longer are one of the 50% “have not” statistics and you are making smarter choices each month. As you get paid more, you are able to save more.

Bottom Line

Once you learn how to save money, your savings are now there for a deposit on a house, a car, an unexpected vacation, further tuition or whatever priority comes your way.

Like any habit, the good habits are always the hardest to start – no sugar in your coffee etc., but with a little perseverance, you will reap the rewards.

How To Make Extra Money (And Still Work Full Time)

0
how to make extra money

Ever wanted to make extra money on the side using side hustles? I know for me, the biggest issue I ever had with money was my income or the lack of income.

Even with a salaried job making $50,000 — it wasn’t enough. So what did I do? Well what most people do, find another source of income.

Sometimes One Job Isn’t Enough

The average American is struggling to make ends meet each month, with 59% of U.S. adults saying they live paycheck to paycheck, according to a recent survey from Charles Schwab. I needed to find ways to support my family without sacrificing my time and my health.

Financial stress is one of the leading causes of mental and physical health issues. I found out first hand how serious stress can be on your personal wellness. So, my search began to find ways to increase my income. I wanted to keep grinding and use my talents and experiences to build multiple sources of income. That’s when I discovered the side hustle.

Flex Your Side Hustle Muscle

In this post, I will share some of the best side hustles I ever had. I have always prided myself on being a workaholic since middle school. I was taught that if you work hard you can accomplish a lot. So I got my first job at sixteen while participating in multiple activities at school and maintaining honor roll. Even today I have two jobs and a fabulous up and coming blog that I created after using this free blog starter guide.

Managing your time effectively and working to support your family is easier with multiple income streams. Try to find jobs that aren’t too physically exhausting and provide a good amount of income. You should always look for ways to get a higher income stream for your family while reducing the amount of time you must actually be at work.

keep grinding

Driving for Lyft

Driving for Lyft is a good way to get an instant income boost but it is definitely like running your own business. There are tax and insurance obligations. You are responsible for other people and need to be professional. You have to keep your car and phone updated and in good working order. It’s much like having another job but you make your own hours. This is one of the most effective side hustle for my family. Right now, I saw that they are offering a $1,000 driver bonus for new drivers, which you can learn more about here.

Blogging/Freelancing

I learned how to get paid for writing articles and start my own personal blog not only for monetary purposes but as a stress reliever. It’s become my outlet and a passion. My dream as a teenager was to write a book and I am well on my way to accomplishing that. I took the plunge and launched my blog.

You don’t have to be perfect but you have to be able to educate yourself and practice continuously. Be confident in your goal which is to help others by sharing your expertise. Blogging and freelancing are a help focused career path and it isn’t easy. Find your niche and focus on your audience to become successful. Be aware that there is definitely work involved and it is not an overnight success. Websites like Fiverr allow you to list the freelancing services that you get paid for!

Surveys

Survey sites are a great way to earn some extra cash in your spare time. I used to wonder if paid surveys really work but they do. I do surveys on my tablet or phone while watching tv or riding in the car or even on my lunch breaks. You can earn small amounts per survey with minimal effort or time.

Some of the best survey sites will give you gift cards instead of cash which come in handy for family expenses, such as gas, groceries or to local department stores.

I joined a few different survey sites to increase my survey intake and profit potential. My current favorites are:

Babysitting and Odd Jobs

You can also make extra money on the side by babysitting or even pet sitting. I also signed up for Avon and found odd jobs on Fiverr, and Craigslist too.

Just be careful, always use your intuition and be cautious with these jobs because sometimes you can get scammers.

Be alert and aware of strange requests and people. I would get jobs from family and friends who needed someone to care for their pets or children. We mowed lawns and cleaned homes or garages for extra cash to boost my income. There are so many different ways to find part-time jobs by using apps like Steady or gig economy sites.

Wrapping It All Up

Using these methods you can certainly find ways to make extra money on the side using side hustles. Please, understand that the true definition of a side hustle is to increase your income. There are many ways to do that so find what works best for you. Looking for more methods to make money from home? How an Effective Logistics Companies Help The Booming E-Commerce Industry

0
logistics

Imagine ordering online and your order unexpectedly takes a while before arriving. You follow up with the platform’s customer service just to be answered with “Your package is already with our 3rd party logistics for delivery”. And every time you call, you always get the same answer. Frustrating isn’t it? Don’t worry, you, as the customer isn’t the only getting annoyed. The e-commerce platform is, too.

Just with this situation, you already know how important an effective logistic partner is in today’s world. With a lot of the world’s population making transactions online, you can only imagine how many orders arrive at every platform’s doorstep. As someone who is part of the e-commerce industry, you should know how logistics companies can make or break your online platform.

Advantages of Effective Logistics to E-Commerce

1. Visibility of Stocks and Items

The first advantage starts with visibility of stocks and items. In e-commerce’s point of view, an effective logistics company can serve as their eyes to the stock levels of each and every SKU they have. With this, an e-commerce company can determine whether or not to replenish certain items. Ideally, the logistics company will give them weekly or monthly reports that show the stocking levels of every item. Some companies can even do these reports in real time.

Visibility of stocks isn’t only beneficial to replenishment. It’s also important in accounting for the current inventory you have on hand. This will give you an idea if you have a lean inventory or a lot of sitting capital in your warehouse.

2. Efficient Picking and Packing

Second, a logistics company can do the picking and packing themselves. Once orders are confirmed, these will be routed to the warehouse and logistics can start picking and packing your order.

An efficient and thorough logistics company can minimize the wrong orders that are sent to your customers. If a logistics company fails to do this, more customers will complain which will eventually lead to a decline in sales for an e-commerce platform. To add to that, constantly having wrong orders will make a dent on your financials because of the extra costs for delivery and handling.

3. 100% Order Fulfilment

If you have an effective logistics partner, then you can achieve 100% order fulfillment. This means that you won’t have any backlogs. Backlogs refer to delayed orders that have not been shipped. The fewer backlogs you have, the better for your customers and your supply chain.

And it’s not just the order fulfillment that benefits your company. When your logistics partner is set to deliver at the earliest possible time, you can achieve a faster lead time. This will always look good on consumers because they know that you can be trusted.

4. Tracking of Delivery Items

Another benefit is the visibility of the packages’ status. On the consumer level, an effective logistics partner allows them to see where their orders are from order confirmation to delivery. On the e-commerce company’s end, they will be able to answer any inquiries their consumers have regarding the movement of the package.

Moreover, if there is an inventory management system in place, the e-commerce company does not have to constantly follow up or ask logistics where the orders are. This lessens the amount of time you spend on calling. Although communication is always a good thing, there are more efficient ways of doing it that don’t involve calling the logistics partner for updates on each and every order.

5. Proper Handling of Reverse Logistics

It’s not just fulfilling orders that logistics can do. In fact, good logistics should also have a streamlined process for reverse logistics. This means they should be able to accommodate in a hassle-free way the return and exchange of items. Although for starting e-commerce platforms, most purchases cannot be refunded or returned, moving forward this should not be the case.

Allowing the return and exchange of items is an added bonus for your company. When consumers know that they have a means of refunding their orders, they will have more reason to use your e-commerce business.

6. Ease of Communication with Clients

Last but definitely not least is the ease of communication. In today’s world, it’s important for both the e-commerce company and the logistics party to communicate effectively. Without this, there will be a lot of misunderstanding regarding inventory, orders, lead time, etc.

Communication is an often-overlooked part of any business. But without an effective means for communication, an e-commerce company can fail. This is because consumers these days expect visibility of their orders and great customer service. There are companies that have a disconnect between their customer service and partner logistics.

In today’s world, a reliable and efficient logistics partner shapes the way e-commerce is evolving. Based on these 6 advantages, you can already understand how important logistics is for this industry. Without it, businesses can fail and customer trust will dwindle. So if you are looking for a logistics partner, you could use these advantages as your checklist to consider. In this way, you can thoroughly assess which logistics partner will be the perfect fit for your business needs.

10 Steps to Prepare for Your Job Interview

0
how to prepare for a job interview

When you are a recent graduate and do not have any experience with a job interview, it can be a challenge to ace your first job interview. As you will be applying for entry-level jobs, there might be a number of candidates with the same qualifications interviewing for the same position. In order to stand out from the crowd, it is essential that you make the best impression in the interview. Follow our below tips to confidently prepare and excel in your first job interview after graduation.

1. Do your research

The basic step before going for an interview is to research the company you are interviewing with. The preliminary research can be conducted by going through the company website or their LinkedIn page. The “About Us” section on the company website can give you a lot of information about the company, its mission, history, activities, organizational structure, etc. Whereas, you can view the profiles of the employees working with the company on LinkedIn and get to know about your probable interviewer and the team you might be working with. Checking Google News to know about the recent developments made by the company in their business trajectory will also prove to be helpful at the time of interview.

2. Read the job description thoroughly

Before going for the interview, read the job description and know about the position and the type of job you are applying for. A sound knowledge about the job industry will also show your passion for the field and will be likely to yield more meaningful conversations during the interview. Having adequate knowledge about the job will make it easier for you to answer questions during the interview and will make you a good fit for the job.

3. Be punctual

Make sure that you reach your interview location right on time. Arriving late for the interview will show that you are not much interested in the job and might disappoint the interviewer. Turning up late might also put you in a panicky and stressful situation in front of the interviewer. In case you are not aware of the area, you can go there a few days before the interview and know the possible ways and time required to reach the exact location. Start a little early on the day of the interview to avoid any unpredictable delays.

4. Dress appropriately

It is always wise to wear appropriate clothes and be well groomed for the interview. Select your outfit based on the type of your job position and the workplace. Do not overdress with a business suit unless the workplace follows a strict protocol. While a pair of trousers and a buttoned, collared shirt goes well for boys, girls can dress up in a business casual shirt or a blouse and pair it up with a skirt or slacks.

5. Be confident and not arrogant

Although you need to willingly promote yourself, your accomplishments and your experience during an interview, ensure that you do not come across as a self-centered, arrogant or narcissistic candidate. Despite scoring well in your university examinations, you will have to practically prove your subject knowledge in your first job. So be confident to face countless obstacles and be prepared to work as a team. Demonstrate yourself as a good team player and your capability to get along with co-workers, managers or clients. Rather than praising yourself during the interview try giving credits where required for your academic achievements. This will make you appear more balanced and a good team player.

6. Body Language

It is important to make a positive first impression during the interview. So be confident and introduce yourself clearly. Shaking hand firmly with the interviewer and making eye contact will represent your confident personality. Maintain a good posture throughout the interview and don’t slouch or touch your face to make a favorable first impression.

7. Show your interest, not desperation

Even though you are desperate about getting the job, refrain yourself from pleading or begging the interviewer. An ideal choice would be to show your keen interest in the position and the company and demonstrate your passion for the role. As you will be a valuable asset for the company, do not show overenthusiasm or apathy and disinterest towards the job.

8. Know your strengths and weaknesses

Prepare yourself to discuss your strengths and weaknesses. Try emphasizing your greatest skills and best qualities, while tactfully spinning your areas of improvement. Also, practice to have control over your conversation and do not give any unnecessary information. Watch your pitch and always answer the questions positively with a considerate tone. Refrain from giving negative opinions about others.

9. Listen and answer all the questions thoughtfully

Carefully listen to all the information that your interviewer is giving from the beginning of the interview. Do not miss any opportunity to grasp the information. As a good listener, you will let the interviewer know that you are attentive. Match the pace of the interviewer while answering any questions. Failing to listen to a question might result in missing an opportunity for proving your abilities and talking about your skills.

10. Ask questions and show gratitude

While most of the candidates often say “No” when asked for any queries, it is advisable to ask appropriate questions to show your genuine interest in the job. Asking questions will also give you an opportunity to learn more about the company and find out if it is the right place for you to work. Do not ask questions about the information already given, but ask some wise questions to get additional information. Once the interview comes towards an end, express your gratitude towards the interviewers and get their contact information. This will be useful for sending a follow-up email after the interview.

I hope you learned how to prepare for your job interview by using the 10 tips above. Once you nail your job interview the work doesn’t stop.

Getting off to a great start in a new job can make all the difference.

It may not seem like it, with the unemployment rate dominating the news, but there are plenty of entry-level college graduates who are entering the workforce. For some, it’s their first real job. Others are moving on to new jobs, and out of the comfort zone of a job and the relationships, they had formed.

More than ever, it’s important to understand what is expected of you and how to beat those expectations. People will make snap judgments and companies are putting more teeth behind a 90-day evaluation period. It’s important that your new co-workers like what they see. So whether this is your first job or your dream job, here are 5 things that should keep in mind.

Side Hustle Guide: 3 Rules For Diversifying Side Hustles To Avoid Burnout

0
side hustle guide

Side jobs should be diverse for the best impact. Here is our side hustle guide to help you make the most of your side gigs to avoid burn out.

Side jobs should be diverse for the best impact.

We all know that the best tip for increasing wealth is to spend less than you make, but sometimes it is hard to cut enough expenses to create a meaningful change with your current income. In these cases, starting a side job, or side hustle can make all the difference.

Once you decide to start side hustling, your hardest decision is going to be where to start. One piece of advice I always encounter is to pick something you love and do that.

While that advice does have merit, that way of thinking is both limiting and potentially destructive.

Side Hustle Guide

1. Sticking with one type of side job is mentally draining.

Maybe I just like to mix things up a bit too much, but picking one type of side job to stick with can be tiresome. Imagine that you are a daycare worker during the day, and do date night sitting on the weekends. While you might be very good at your job and enjoy children, you risk burnout.

One of my favorite side hustles is tutoring with VIPKID, because the hourly rate can be quite impressive and you can work from home. However, what happens when you are a math teacher by day, and a math tutor by night? Burnout and boredom can quickly occur, making your side job mentally draining.

I like to include multiple types of side jobs on my hustling resume, such as pet sitting, watching houses, and teaching dance classes, to prevent boredom and burnout in my own life.

2. Side jobs that are too similar don’t offer protection.

The wisdom of diversifying your investments applies to side hustles, too. If all your eggs are in one basket, you’re going to be financially devastated when the basket gets dropped or stolen. Likewise, if you depend solely on one place for side income, you may end up disappointed or scrambling.

Use successful bloggers as an example: they do not simply rely on freelance writing positions to make money. From affiliate marketing to sponsored posts, to staff writing and social media management, successful bloggers who make real money on their blogs diversify their income streams to make the biggest impact. This protects them from slow periods where paid writing gigs may not be coming in.

Of course, you don’t want to diversify too much. Doing so can also lead to burn out, or create unnecessary stress. Setting yourself up with two different side jobs can give you protection against slow employment periods, while still helping you to stay sane.

3. Choosing a side job doing something you love may sap your passion.

This may seem backward, but I highly recommend not tapping solely into your passions to make money.

This example is from my own life: one semester I worked at a few colleges, teaching English. Because I love reading and writing, this job was exciting to me. I decided to tap into my passion to make more money and started picking up tutoring students. I also worked on my blog, did freelance writing for others, and graded curriculum-wide writing examinations.

What ended up happening was that I would talk about writing for 20 hours a week from my apartment, read and grade the writing of others for more than 10 hours each week, sometimes as long as 7 hours straight on the weekends, met with three or four tutoring students each week at all hours, which interrupted my home time, and generally spent each night before bed doing research and writing for my own clients. On top of this, I was working on my own scholarly work when I had free time, which required extensive reading and revision.

I am not afraid to be busy, and the hustle and bustle of that semester definitely encouraged me to be smart about the side jobs I chose (This list has some of my favorite side hustles). That semester also taught me something important: doing one thing for hours every day can suck the passion right out of it.

When summer came that year, I was relieved. I needed time to relax. I still love reading and writing, but I decided to limit the amount of writing-focused work I did so that I wouldn’t experience burnout. Now I am content with working my full-time job and writing for my own pleasure and blog clients, but no longer take on excessive amounts of tutoring or extra grading work.

Bottom Line

Side jobs can be as complicated or as simple as you make them, but they should be diverse. Choosing a variety of side jobs, even from just two industries, can help you find a creative outlet while preventing burnout. Just make sure you have a clear idea about time management while you work because a poorly managed side hustle can be just as detrimental as non-diversified side jobs.

What are your tips for diversifying side jobs? Did you ever find yourself burnt out from too much of the same thing?

How To Save Money Fast in Your 20s

0
how to save money

Ready to learn how to save money effortlessly? As a single parent and college student, I mastered the art of being broke. No matter how hard I tried I never could get out of the constant circle of being broke. When you don’t have a good understanding of money you can never properly manage it. Education and budgeting tools are key to changing your money habits. So, today I am going to help you learn how to save money in your 20s even when you’re broke.

5 Savings Goals to Reach in Your 20s

1. Stay Disciplined

Discipline is key! Learn how to tell yourself and others NO! To accomplish this I mastered the art of pretending to be broke even when I had the money. If I did not feel that the cause was worth the money then I did not do it.

Examples:

“No, I can’t give you a ride”

“ No, I can’t go out this weekend”

“ No, we can’t go on Vacation”

“No, I shouldn’t buy those new shoes”

“No honey, you don’t need another My Little Pony Toy”

See! It’s easy once you get the hang of it. If it is not in my budget I try really hard to say no to it. I believe in having a plan to reduce stress and accomplish goals more effectively. A budget is a key to keeping things in perspective. There were months when we were unsure how to pay everything or to get caught up on past due bills. I began to sit down and list out all my bills.

This has progressed into a very detailed Excel Spreadsheet and has caused me to become obsessed with learning more about my finances. I encourage you to get more focused on your finances for long-term benefits and monitor where every dime is going. I personally use and recommend tracking all your saving goals using Acorns and it’s completely free if you’re a student.

2. Establish the Habit of Saving Money

Saving is something we all NEED to do. It is imperative that we find ways to intentionally save but be aware that you shouldn’t take away from your necessities to do it. Don’t sacrifice your rent money for your savings. If you are broke like I was you have what Dave Ramsey calls and income issue, not a savings issue. You should increase your income by doing side hustles or jobs to gain income beyond what you need for your bills.

One way I was able to save without too much damage to my income was by using the Digit app and putting my savings on autopilot. Digit systematically took small amounts of cash from my bank account and stored it in a digital account for me. I loved this except when I literally planned every dime and then Digit took some. But it’s readily available to get your money within 24 hours. I have autosave on my bank account now.

I automatically move a certain amount of my paycheck into my savings before it gets to me. It’s set up to come out on payday at 8 AM. I then manage my bills with whatever is left. Do not do these options if you cannot afford your monthly bills. Fix your income issue first and then you can try to save small amounts.

The easiest way to start saving is by just putting small amounts into a jar or savings account daily. Pocket change is always around and easily available.

3. Increase Income/Side Hustles

Side hustles are the best ways to fix your income issues. The broke life is not the best life. Find ways to cut back on expenses and then go seek out ways you can make extra money. Here is a list of some of the side hustles I have done

4. Coupons and Bargain Hunting

I LOVE to save money on items I already have to buy. One way I reduced my bills was by joining a bulk grocery store, BJ’s. For a low annual fee, I can buy larger amounts of food for great prices! My family of 3 was spending $500 a month on groceries. Since joining BJ’s we have cut our budget down to $300. We mostly only need certain items because bulk lasts much longer than the bi-weekly shopping I previously did. BJ’s also provides coupons regularly throughout the month which saves me even more money.

I am a bargain hunter and prefer to never pay full price. I love to online shop and find great deals on Groupon and Amazon. I search online before I ever step foot in a store. I love to go to flea markets and garage sales to see what I can find. I use coupons and find sales on clearance racks for my family’s clothing and other basic needs. The search will be worth the cost overall. If you’re just getting started, I like this coupons for beginners quick read.

5. Wait before making big purchases

Have a big purchase you are really wanting to splurge on? Sleep on it. Give yourself a few days to consider if you really want to make the purchase. Maybe you’ll decide that you don’t really need that item. If you do end up wanting to purchase the item, get cash back apps like Dosh. You can learn more about them in this Dosh Review.

6. Refinance your student loans

If your annual income is higher than your student loan balance and you have a credit score of 690 or higher — or access to a co-signer who does — consider refinancing your student loans to a lower interest rate. I would recommend using this guide to learn about refinancing your student loans.

It’s Possible

I want to let all the broke people know that you do not have to stay broke but it’s up to you to change it. If there is no change then your situation won’t and can’t. Set a goal and make a plan to obtain it. Start small if you need to and educate yourself. Good job staying informed! Feel free to take the weekend off in your apartment with your new found desire to save money – knowledge is definitely powerful!

8 Quick and Dirty Financial Tips to Get Your Money in Shape for 2019

financial tips

Here are 8 ways to improve your personal finance situation with these quick and dirty financial tips. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that it is absolutely essential to properly manage personal finances.

Whether you’re saving for a rainy day, making sure you’re covered if the car breaks down or the washer breaks, planning a vacation, figuring out cash management services, budgeting to pay off credit cards, or trying to make significant investments like buying a house, knowing how to manage your money is essential.

While not everyone needs to use smart finances to get out of debt, absolutely everyone wants to know how to make the most out of their earnings, and enjoy a higher quality lifestyle, that is stable and financially secure. The following tips aren’t published in a book anywhere, and they’re not something we teach in school however they are points that everyone who is savvy when it comes to savings, investments, and outgoings are well aware of.

1. Stay On Top Of Interest Rates

This may be easier said than done, as many families have mortgages, loans, credit cards, and car payments to balance out every month. However, when you have time you can save yourself significant amounts of money every month by paying off higher-interest debts faster than others and making sure you’re aware of when you can switch to 0% interest credit cards or mortgages. Interest can eat up your salary, and you have nothing at all to show for it.

2. Mark It On Your Calendar

Those days when payments are due, or taxes need to be filed should be a regular on your calendar as other daily necessities. This is a basic thing to do that ensures you never miss a payment and are completely in control of all your finances. You can tell straight away if something isn’t right, and won’t end up running around trying to pay everything at the last minute, or dealing with late fees.

3. Set Real Goals

If you have a dream vacation, or car, or plans to renovate your home, you should be vaguely aware of the costs involved. Figuring out the exact costs and how much you would need to save every month in order to realize these goals can be a great step in restricting wasteful spending. Many people don’t even realize how much they spend a month on take-out, restaurants, cable TV or even small purchases like buying lunch at the office canteen instead of taking their own. You may surprise yourself with how much you can save when you suddenly have a reason to stop spending on unimportant items.

4. Commit To A Savings Account

Nate J., a financial manager from Whippio, says that ‘most people don’t realize how much they can afford to save.’ While many of us are able to account for 90% of our earnings, between housing, groceries, the gym, and a social life, there is often a final 10% that just disappears. However that last 10% is spent, you can normally find it by writing down every single purchase for a month. At the end of that month, you can then normally see that 5-10% of your income could go into a savings account if you just stopped unnecessary purchases.

5. Get Rid Of Your Cards

Dozens of experiments and personal stories show that it’s much easier to save money and stop unnecessary spending by using cash only. This means that you actually see your finances dwindle with every purchase of a few dollars, and you could be surprised by how much you’ve spent at the end of the day.

6. Stay Positive

If you’re walking around telling people you’re bad with money, can’t save up, and will never have savings, then that is exactly what will happen. Find a way to adopt a good mental attitude, tell yourself you can do it, and treat saving up as a form of self-love – you’re taking care of yourself, your future, and your dreams simply by putting down a spare lipstick or pair of designer trainers.

7. Don’t Be Shy About Your Value

One of the best ways to have more money is to make more. Don’t be afraid to negotiate for better pay, a better job title, or even a promotion, maternity or paternity pay, overtime, or bonuses. When you know you are a good employee, you deserve to be valued, and you should be paid for the good work you do.

8. Don’t Cut Out Treats Altogether

While many of us could cut back when it comes to taking out, clothes, and other indulgences, completely depriving yourself is not the way to go. It’s not feasible and you won’t stick to your new plans if you’re miserable. Try to cut back, rather than completely stop buying yourself the small things that make you happy.

Conclusion

There’s no easy way to have everything you want, and never have to think about money. However, implementing the above tips can radially improve your financial situation with very little effort.

Business Partnerships: Choosing the Right Partnership for Your Small Business

business partnerships

If you’ve ever seriously considered starting your own business at any point, then you’ve undoubtedly thought about the many obstacles that lie ahead: From securing sufficient funding to finance your business to structuring a sound business model that will win over potential investors, running a business is fraught with difficulties from day one.

When starting your own small business, one of your first steps should be launching your website. This gives potential customers an easy way to find you online and discover more about your business. Click here to check out a free guide that will help get your site up and running in less than an hour.

What is a Business Partnership?

Running your business on your own can sound intimidating. That’s why many business owners enter into a small business partnership rather than staking it out on their own. With a partnership, you dramatically improve your chances of success. In fact, 54% of startups that raise $10 million or more have more than one founder, and teams of two raise 30% more money when funding their venture.

Historically, some of the largest enterprises and companies birthed from partnerships. What’s important to note is that in most cases, both the founders brought something more to the table than their financial resources. For instance, Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen started the tech giant together in their garage. According to Allen, Gates was the “sanity check” on the company’s ideas, and Allen helped more with big-picture strategy.

Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen, co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s, both shared a similar vision for their company: They subscribed to the belief that “business should be using its power to help address social and environmental issues,” and not just turn a profit. As you can see, finding a partner is more than just improving your personal chances of success; it’s finding the right person that aligns with your core beliefs and goals going forward. For that reason, finding the right business partner is of utmost importance.

Choosing the Right Partnership Structure

So, what types of partnerships are available to you? Here are three to consider:

General Partnership

In a general partnership, all partners involved agree to take mutual responsibility for the business’s debt and running it’s day-to-day operations. General partnerships are a popular choice for business owners because they are easy to start and can adapt to many different business models.

Limited Partnership

Limited partnerships are ideal if partners will take on different roles in running the company. For instance, one partner may a backseat role as an investor, while the other oversees operations and logistical matters.

Limited Liability Partnership

Stuck wondering, “Do I Need an LLC?” Under a limited liability partnership, owners have limited liability, meaning that should the business incur debts or a lawsuit, the owners’ personal assets cannot be touched by a court of law. Additionally, profits go straight to the owners, who are taxed individually based on their income.

Each of these structures has its own pros and cons and should be carefully considered by you and your business partner. Whatever type of business structure you opt, it’s important that you and your business partner are on the same page and agree going into it. Nothing is worse than launching a business venture on the wrong foot.
